Rate : $18.00 per hour

Summary

The Kitchen Prep will perform kitchen tasks such maintaining cleanliness of all food service areas and preparing workstations, so that food can be prepared according to plan. Kitchen Prep will ensure all kitchen equipment and appliances are ready for use. A Kitchen Prep cook will be quick and diligent and willing to improve on the job. Incumbent will be able to follow instructions as well as all health and safety rules in the kitchen. The ideal candidate will also be able to function in a fast-paced, busy environment as a part of a team.

Essential Functions

  • Follow the prep list created by chef to prepare breakfast, lunch, salads
  • Measure ingredients and seasonings to be used in cooking
  • Prepare cooking ingredients by washing and chopping vegetables, cutting meat etc.
  • Undertake basic cooking duties such as reducing sauces, parboiling food etc.
  • Support with meal set-up including stocking condiments, breads, rolls, buns and chips
  • Support with maintenance and organizing shelves with kitchen dishes including labeling and stocking all ingredients on shelves so they can be organized and easily accessible
  • Ensure kitchen equipment and appliances are ready for use
  • Clean, wash, and store all eating and drinking utensils, pots, pans, and other related items.
  • Clean all kitchen surfaces (floors, walls, ceilings, etc.); maintaining clean dishwasher and dishwashing areas.
  • Facilitate and ensure a safe environment (with respect to health and safety hazards) in the kitchen. Observe safety procedures and precautions.
  • Ensure all food and other items are stored properly
  • Comply with nutrition and sanitation guidelines
  • Perform other kitchen duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications – Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required

Knowledge required

  • Knowledge of safe, sanitary food handling procedures
  • Business English, spelling, and basic math
  • Knowledge of health and safety rules in a kitchen

Skills Required

  • Proven experience as prep cook
  • Manual dexterity able to operate cutting tools and kitchen utensils

Supervisory Responsibilities

This position does not have supervisory responsibilities.

Environmental Conditions (Working Conditions)

This position is responsible to work in “client friendly” environments and is assigned to a site where homeless services are provided (shelter, motel, etc.). There is some responsibility to work in noisy environments where homeless participants are present.

Physical Requirements

This position will require walking, driving and standing for extended periods of time, safely using required tools and equipment to perform food preparation. Ability to bend, stand, and stoop for long periods of time, and working long hours in hot conditions. Ability to lift and move 50 pounds. Staff also spends time thinking, writing, listening, and speaking.

Mental Requirements

This position will require the individual to be able to handle any/all of the following: constant distractions, interruptions, uncontrollable changes in priorities/work schedules: be able to process information, think and conceptualize.
